Extra Hour

Your Extra Hour

Sixty minutes, six small tasks, and a porch ready for darker evenings.

This Sunday, November 1, the clocks fall back. Most of us will spend the extra hour asleep. We’d suggest spending it on the porch.

From Monday, dusk arrives before dinner. The entrance is seen by lamplight, and your planters become the first thing you notice on the way home. It doesn’t take an afternoon to get them ready. Six short tasks, ten minutes each, are enough to make the season change look intentional.

Why this weekend

When the clocks change, sunset moves up by an hour. Depending where you live, it will be dark by about 5 pm, so the porch you see each evening is the one under the light.

Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1 at 2 a.m.

Six tasks, ten minutes each

010:00 – 0:10

Reset the timers

The clocks changed, but your porch lights didn’t. Update the timers on outdoor lights and string lights so they come on with the new dusk. If you still have a drip line or irrigation timer running, this is a good time to pause it for the season.

Worth knowing: Smart plugs usually update on their own. Plug-in mechanical timers need to be reset by hand.
020:10 – 0:20

Clear what’s spent

Pull any annuals that have collapsed after a frost and trim back tired foliage. Leave anything still standing well. Ornamental kale, grasses and sedum carry comfortably into November.

For a complete guide to what to pull and what to keep, read First Frost.

030:20 – 0:30

Wash the planters

A bucket of warm water, a little mild soap and a soft brush are all you need. Wipe away summer’s water marks and soil splash, then rinse. Mayne planters are made from high-grade polyethylene, so there is no sealing or refinishing to do.

While you’re there, make sure the drainage holes are clear.

040:30 – 0:40

Top up and cover

Soil settles over a season. Add a few centimetres of fresh potting mix to any arrangement staying outdoors, then finish with a layer of bark mulch or pine needles. It looks finished, and it helps protect roots through freeze and thaw.

050:40 – 0:50

Light the way

With dusk arriving earlier, a little light goes a long way. Set a lantern beside the door, or wind warm white lights through a few evergreen boughs. Pale foliage reads best after dark. Silver dusty miller, white heather and variegated euonymus all hold their shape under porch light.

060:50 – 1:00

Plan the next look

Step back to the sidewalk and take a photo at dusk. Note where the entrance feels empty, measure any spot that could hold another planter, and start a short list for the holiday season. December is easier when the planning is already done.

Shorter days,
the same welcome.

An hour is enough to carry the porch from autumn into the darker months. The pieces that anchor it, built to stay outside season after season, are already in place. Everything else is a small adjustment.
